PhD Candidate from Göttingen’s Department of East Asian Studies Presents at Conference in Hong Kong

On December 5th, Andreas Günter Weis, a PhD candidate at the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Göttingen, participated in the international conference on Global Yijing Studies in Hong Kong. On December 5th, he presented his lecture titled “The Three Women behind Wilhelm’s I Ging.”

In his talk, Weis shed light on the significant contributions of three women who supported Richard Wilhelm (1873–1930) in translating the Yijing into German. He explored how Salome Wilhelm, Anna Marie Luise Stoll, and Bertha Sierstorpff, each in their own unique way, contributed to the creation of this groundbreaking work and facilitated Wilhelm’s transition from a Protestant missionary to a renowned professor and cultural mediator between China and Europe.
