We are pleased to announce the upcoming workshop “East Asia and West Asias: Dialogues in Past, Present, and Future Worldmaking,” to be held at the Historische Sternwarte (Geismar Landstraße 11, 37083 Göttingen) on December 5–6, 2025.

Bringing together an international group of scholars from East Asia, West Asia, Europe, and North America, this two-day event explores the multiple historical, intellectual, and cultural entanglements that have shaped Asian worldmaking across time. Through panels, book talks, and roundtables, the workshop examines mobility, Islamic networks, the question of the state, and the shifting horizons of regional and global interconnection.

Over the past two centuries, Buddhism in China has engaged dynamically with shifting socio-political landscapes, global circulations of knowledge, and the multifaceted pressures of modernity. These interactions have reshaped doctrine, ritual life, institutional structures, and China’s broader cultural imagination and identity.
This lecture series traces how Buddhist ideas and practices have been interpreted, adapted, and reconfigured from the late Qing through the Republican era to the present, drawing on perspectives from history, religious studies, anthropology, and philosophy. By following these trajectories of change, the series highlights how Buddhism has shaped—and been reshaped by—China’s changing intellectual, social, and political life. The series also provides a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue across fields, methods, and historical contexts.

Förderung für Andreas Fuchs und Krisztina Kis-Katos im Rahmen der BMFTR-Richtlinie „Moderne Chinaforschung II“

Das Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt fördert das Forschungsvorhaben „Die Vermessung von Chinas Wirtschaftsdiplomatie (ChiWiDi)“ von Prof. Dr. Andreas Fuchs (Professur für Entwicklungsökonomik und Globale Politische Ökonomie) und Prof. Dr. Krisztina Kis-Katos (Professur für Internationale Wirtschaftspolitik) an der Universität Göttingen im Rahmen der Richtlinie „Moderne Chinaforschung II“ mit 496.554 Euro. Beteiligt sind außerdem Prof. Dr. Anja Jetschke (Internationale Beziehungen) und Prof. Dr. Dominic Sachsenmaier (Modernes China) sowie Forschende an Partnerinstitutionen in Bonn, Groningen, Nanjing und Peking.
