SUMMARY:Encounters and Creativity: The Terminology\, Philosophy and Discourses in Chinese Buddhism and their modern Transformations
DESCRIPTION:Workshop:\nEncounters and Creativity: The Terminology\, Philosophy and Discourses in Chinese Buddhism and their modern Transformations\nTime and location: \nJune 15–17\, 2026 | Heyne Haus\, University of Göttingen \nFurther information: https://www.cemeas.de/encounters-and-creativity-the-terminology-philosophy-and-discourses-in-chinese-buddhism-and-their-modern-transformations/ \nOverview: \nThis workshop explores the transformations of Buddhist concepts\, ideas\, and discourses in China within the broader context of long-term intercultural encounters and intellectual change since the seventeenth century. From the introduction of Christianity and new technologies to the rise of modern science and so-called “Western” intellectual trends\, China’s religious and intellectual history has been shaped through continuous interactions across regional and national boundaries. Within these processes\, Buddhism played a significant yet often underappreciated role as a medium of conceptual innovation\, cultural exchange\, and political engagement. \nRather than treating concepts and discourses as fixed categories\, this workshop approaches them as entry points for examining how Buddhist thinkers\, institutions\, and communities rearticulated ideas\, reshaped language\, and responded strategically and creatively to changing political\, social\, and intellectual conditions. Participants are invited to engage with these issues from diverse methodological and disciplinary perspectives. \nThe workshop understands “modern transformation” not as a singular rupture\, but as a complex and ongoing process involving continuities as well as changes across different temporal and spatial dimensions. It therefore encourages discussion beyond simple distinctions between “premodern” and “modern\,” while also considering regional\, transregional\, and global contexts. \n  \nParticipants: \nDanica Cao (University of Chicago) \nHuaiyu Chen (Arizona State University) \nMarino Davide (University of Göttingen) \nRichard Ellguth (Free University of Berlin) \nTalia Kav (University of Hamburg) \nJan Kiely (Geneva Graduate Institute) \nCarsten Krause (University of Hamburg) \nRongdao Lai (McGill University) \nJingjing Li (Leiden University) \nWushi Lin (Ghent University) \nChen kuo Lin (National Chengchi University) \nChristian Meyer (Free University of Berlin) \nAmandine Peronnet (National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations) \nQinqin Peng (University of Göttingen) \nJens Reinke (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) \nJustin Ritzinger (University of Miami) \nAxel Schneider (University of Göttingen) \nMiaoxiang Shi (Fo-Guang-Shan-Tempel\, Berlin) \nYongchao Shi (Fo-Guang-Shan-Tempel\, Berlin) \nShiyu Su (Leipzig University) \nFrancesca Tarocco (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice) \nYuan Yan (Independent Scholar) \nJakub Zamorski (Jagiellonian University) \nZiyi Zhu (University of Göttingen) \n  \nOrganizers and Sponsors： \n Organized by Ziyi Zhu (M.A.) and Dr. Qinqin Peng (University of Göttingen) \nAdvised by Prof. Dr. Axel Schneider (University of Göttingen) and Prof. Dr. Eyal Aviv (The George Washington University) \nCo-sponsored by the Department of East Asian Studies and Confucius Academic Institute\, \nUniversity of Göttingen.

SUMMARY:3rd Kiel-Göttingen-CEPR Conference China in the Global Economy
DESCRIPTION:3rd Kiel-Göttingen-CEPR Conference China in the Global Economy\nChina remains the world’s foremost exporter and a major global investor\, with an economic footprint that continues to shape global markets and political relations. Its state-led economic model and the close alignment of economic and political objectives distinguish China from Western economies\, firmly positioning it at the centre of contemporary geoeconomic dynamics. Renewed geopolitical tensions\, shifting trade policies\, and heightened strategic rivalry—particularly following the return of the Trump administration in the United States in 2025—have added new volatility and uncertainty to international economic relations. Frictions over market access\, competition practices\, and strategic industries have intensified. As these dynamics evolve\, the need for rigorous\, policy-relevant academic research on China’s global economic role has become more pressing than ever. \nBuilding on the success of its previous editions\, the 3rd Kiel-Göttingen-CEPR China Conference will once again bring together leading international scholars to analyse China’s role in the global economy. Hosted in central Berlin\, the conference aims to deepen dialogue between cutting-edge academic research and policy practice. By providing a forum for exchange between researchers\, business practitioners\, and policymakers\, the conference seeks to advance informed debate on China’s economic impact and its implications for international economic relations. \nWe are honored to welcome two distinguished keynote speakers: \n• Chang-Tai Hsieh (University of Chicago\, CEPR and NBER) on “Where is China Heading?” \n• Fabrizio Zilibotti (Yale University\, CEPR and NBER) on “China’s Unbound Prometheus: Growth and Structural Transformation”. \nConference highlights include the Kiel–MERICS Policy Panel on “China Shock 2.0: How Can Europe Shape Its Strategic Response to Geoeconomic Disruption?”\, with Katharina Erhardt (Professor\, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf; Research Director & Head of Industrial Policy Lab\, Kiel Institute and CEPR)\, Jens Eskelund (President\, European Chamber of Commerce in China)\, Mikko Huotari (Director\, Mercator Institute for China Studies) and Joanna Szychowska (Director\, Directorate B – Asia (I)\, Services and Investment\, Digital Trade\, Intellectual Property and Public Procurement\, DG Trade\, European Commission) as panelists. \nThe program also features a special live edition of Global China Conversations on “China Shock 2.0: How Can the German Automotive Industry Respond?”\, with Manuel Kallweit (Head of Economic Intelligence\, German Association of the Automotive Industry\, VDA)\, Karoline Rogge (Professor of Sustainability Innovation and Policy\, University of Sussex Business School and Fraunhofer ISI)\, and Sander Tordoir (Chief Economist\, Centre for European Reform and CEPR) as speakers. \nThe conference will feature around 30 presentations of recent research on China in the global economy. Confirmed speakers include Philipp Boeing (Goethe University Frankfurt and ZEW)\, Julian Hinz (University of Bielefeld\, Kiel Institute and CEPR)\, Jiandong Ju (Tsinghua University and CEPR)\, Soo Yeon Kim (University of British Columbia)\, Bingjing Li (University of Hong Kong)\, Faqin Lin (China Agricultural University)\, Layna Mosley (Princeton University)\, Andrea Presbitero (International Monetary Fund and CEPR)\, and Johannes Van Biesebroeck (KU Leuven and CEPR). \nFurther details here.

SUMMARY:Global China Conversations #50 China Shock 2.0: How Can the German Automotive Industry Respond?
DESCRIPTION:Global China Conversations #50\nChina Shock 2.0: How Can the German Automotive Industry Respond?\n\n\n\n\n  \n30.06.2026\, 11:00 – 12:00 CEST \n\n\n\n\n\nWith registration: Registration for online participation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChina’s rise as an automotive powerhouse is reshaping competitive dynamics in the global car industry and challenging one of the pillars of Germany’s economy. Chinese EV manufacturers are expanding their technological capabilities\, scaling production at remarkable speed\, and entering European markets with highly competitive prices and rapidly improving quality. At the same time\, German automakers remain deeply tied to China for sales\, production\, and innovation. As geopolitical tensions grow and industrial policies become more assertive\, German automakers face pressure to adapt their business operations and long-term strategies. How serious is the challenge posed by rising Chinese competition for German manufacturers and suppliers? Where do German automakers and suppliers continue to hold a competitive edge? Where can German and Chinese automakers and suppliers continue to cooperate? And what role should German and European economic policy play in maintaining competitiveness and technological leadership\, while safeguarding openness? \nProgram\nThe event consists of two impulse lectures followed by a discussion. \nThe Global China Conversation #50 will be held in English. \nAttendance is possible online via Zoom or in Berlin (Representation of the State Government Schleswig-Holstein (In den Ministergärten 8-10\, 10117 Berlin) as part of the 3rd Kiel-Göttingen-CEPR Conference. \nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n© Dominik Butzmann\n\n\n\n\nManuel Kallweit\nManuel Kallweit\, born in 1983 in Eisenach\, studied economics in Würzburg and Barcelona. SUMMARY:Lecture: The Formation of Chinese Buddhist Sectarianism: Centering on the Concepts of Zong and Jiao
DESCRIPTION:The Formation of Chinese Buddhist Sectarianism: Centering on the Concepts of Zong and Jiao\n中國佛教宗派認識的形成史——以「宗」與「教」概念為中心\nLecture on 01. July (16-18\, KWZ 1.601) \nThe lecture will take place in a hybrid format and here is the zoom link (both lectures will use the same link): https://uni-goettingen.zoom-x.de/j/68015883500?pwd=sBRwN4M79JgwpsCTbrKKFpwsaNyiMh.1 \n \nAbstract \nToday\, Chinese Buddhism is often described through sectarian categories such as Tiantai\, Huayan\, Faxiang\, and Pure Land. However\, this “school-based” (zong 宗) framework was not always dominant. It developed gradually over time. \nDrawing on texts such as the Shimen Zhengtong\, Fozu Tongji\, Shijiao Sanzijing\, Bazong Erxing\, and Shizong Lüeshuo\, this lecture traces how the concepts of zong (school/lineage) and jiao (teaching) evolved in Chinese Buddhist history. It shows that from the Song and Yuan periods onward\, jiao was more commonly used to classify Buddhist teachings\, while zong only became the primary category from the late Ming and early Qing periods. The lecture highlights the modernization of Buddhist sectarian thinking in the late Qing and early Republican eras\, when scholars and reformers such as Hesheli Rushan\, Yang Wenhui\, Liang Qichao\, and Taixu proposed influential models of “Eight\,” “Ten\,” “Thirteen\,” and “Eight Mahāyāna” schools. It further considers the role of Japanese Buddhist scholarship in shaping these modern classifications. \nThis lecture argues that the familiar system of “schools” in Chinese Buddhism is not an ancient\, continuous tradition\, but a modern construct formed through intellectual exchange and historical reorganization. \n  \nShort Bio\n\nChen Jidong holds a B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy from Peking University and a Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies (Literature) from the University of Tokyo. He has previously served as a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at Peking University and as a specially appointed associate professor at Musashino University in Japan. He is currently a professor at Aoyama Gakuin University. \nHis research focuses on the history of Chinese Buddhism\, modern Sino-Japanese Buddhist exchanges\, and modern Chinese intellectual history. SUMMARY:Lecture: Self-Affirmation and Self-Discovery: Mutual Understandings between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism and the Construction of East Asian Buddhist Identities in Modern Era
DESCRIPTION:Self-Affirmation and Self-Discovery: Mutual Understandings between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism and the Construction of East Asian Buddhist Identities in Modern Era\n自我肯定與自我發現：近代中日佛教的相互認識與東亞佛教認同的建構\n \n02. July (16-18\, KWZ 0.607) \nThe lecture will take place in a hybrid format and here is the zoom link (both lectures will use the same link): https://uni-goettingen.zoom-x.de/j/68015883500?pwd=sBRwN4M79JgwpsCTbrKKFpwsaNyiMh.1 \nAbstract \nIn the modern period\, unprecedented contact and exchange unfolded between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism. From the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the Second World War\, monks\, scholars\, and diplomats from both countries continuously observed\, commented on\, and studied each other’s Buddhist traditions\, leaving behind a rich corpus of valuable records. From the Japanese monk Ogurisu Kōchō’s investigative journey to China\, to Huang Zunxian’s Record of Japan (Riben Guozhi); from the intellectual exchanges between Yang Wenhui and Nanjō Bun’yū\, to the mutual visits of Taixu\, Daxing\, and D. T. Suzuki\, a history of Buddhist dialogue spanning nearly a century gradually took shape. \nThis lecture examines these figures and events in order to explore how modern Chinese and Japanese Buddhism redefined themselves through the process of “knowing the Other.” Japanese Buddhism\, by reinterpreting the Chinese Buddhist tradition\, gradually constructed its self-identity as the representative of East Asian Mahāyāna Buddhism. Chinese Buddhism\, in turn\, by observing the modernization of Japanese Buddhism\, rediscovered its own historical traditions and cultural value\, while also reflecting on paths of Buddhist reform and revival. \nThis history is not only one of Sino-Japanese Buddhist exchange\, but also an intellectual history in which the self is discovered through the Other. The processes of “self-affirmation” and “self-discovery” thus constitute one of the most important historical questions in the formation of modern East Asian Buddhist identities. \n \n \nShort Bio\n\nChen Jidong holds a B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy from Peking University and a Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies (Literature) from the University of Tokyo. His major monographs include Buddhist Studies in the Late Qing Dynasty: Centered on Yang Wenhui and Ogurisu Kōchō’s Experience in Late Qing China: The Beginning of Modern Sino-Japanese Buddhist Exchange. His articles include “Is the Philosophy of Foreign Concepts Inherently Chinese?
