SUMMARY:Lecture: Patrick Lai 賴志成
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Green Luck? Red Luck?\nIntercultural Differences in Language from the Lens of Colour Related Expressions\n对外汉语教学之——中英色彩文化与语义对比\nTuesday\, July 7\, 2015 \n6 pm\, KWZ Room 0.603\nPatrick Lai 賴志成 (Hong Kong Institute of Education)\n \n  \n \nA comparison between Chinese and English shows that differences in language usage can arise from cultural differences. The use of colour is a prime example. With colour being an objective phenomenon\, the basic meaning of colour does not differ in the two languages. However\, the same colour can carry different meanings and nuances at deeper levels of language use due to different historic backgrounds and traditions. Studying the rich contents of colour associated expressions helps facilitate understanding of intercultural differences. In this talk\, the literature on comparative study of colour associated language will first be reviewed. Then the historical developments of colour associated expressions in both languages and cultures will be explored. The final part compares the contemporary use of colours in English and Chinese. The talk will also touch upon application of the Berlin and Kay Theory and the Barry McLaughlin Theory in this research field.\n \n通过对比英汉两种语言中词的差异，可以证明若文化不同，遣词用字也会有很大的不同。 \nThe lecture will be held in English! \nImage: Patrick Lai\n\n  \n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Dr. Nellie Chu
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: The Spaces Between: Corporatizing Lineage Belonging and the Making of Fast Fashion in Southern China\nThursday\, July 2\, 2015  \n6 pm\, KWZ Room 0.609\nDr. Nellie Chu (University of Göttingen)\n\n  \n \nMy presentation introduces my research on the global commodity chains for fast fashion in Guangzhou\, which I began during the period of 2010-2012. In particular\, I describe how these global commodity chains within the Pearl River Delta region of southern China entails post-socialist transformations of property and kin relations among members of long-standing lineages who currently claim use-rights to the land.  \nUsing the Zhongda garment district in southeastern Guangzhou as a case study\, I argue that the formation of global commodity chains for fast fashion in southern China entails the re-definition of lineage belonging as socialist collectives are converted to profit-driven corporations by long-standing villagers. Specifically\, I outline the historic transformation of this site from a collection of former agricultural villages known as Nanjing village during the Maoist period to a massive industrial hub\, which currently stands as a conglomerate of several neighboring urban villages which are administratively suspended between rural and urban designations. \nI begin by narrating the re-division of the land from individualized plots loosely organized around various lineages into massive agricultural collectives during the early years of the Communist Revolution\, and the subsequent re-distribution of the land from agricultural collectives to privatized household plots during the Reform period when Deng Xiaoping promoted citizens to experiment with entrepreneurship and other capitalist practices. In particular\, I emphasize how in light of these large-scale changes\, long-standing members of Nanjing village redefine the affective and profit-driven contours of lineage belonging in face of large-scale urbanization projects. Their kin-based capitalist activities as corporate lineages in turn shape the ways in which members of these local village collectives assert their claims against the state as share-holders of the land. \nImage: Theen Moy \, Liminal Space\, https://flic.kr/p/oMZJdP\, CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

SUMMARY:The 8th East Asia Research Salon
DESCRIPTION:The 8th East Asia Research Salon\nBritta Büermann\nSeeing Tradition in Modernity: Yang Honglie’s Historiography of China’s Legal System\nJune 22\, 2015\, 6pm\nKWZ\, Conference Room 0.701\, Heinrich- Düker- Weg 14\, 37073 Göttingen\n \nAbstract:\nIn the 1930s the eminent legal historian Yang Honglie 楊鴻烈(1903-1977) tried to balance modern Western and traditional Chinese concepts in order to establish a new Chinese legal system (法系 faxi). In the process of transferring Western legal concepts and embedding them in China’s history\, Yang developed his own understanding of these concepts. By searching for forerunners in China’s history he\nargued against the idea of the West as the only possible judicial paradigm\, and\ninstead looked for indigenous traditions to be re-interpreted in order to suit the purpose of his ideology. In my dissertation project\, I research Yang Honglie’s understanding of concepts such as the principle of equality or an independent judiciary and how he put them into a Chinese context; and his overall vision for the future of China’s legal system. \n \n  \nBritta Büermann studied Chinese Studies at the University of Würzburg. In 2006 and 2008\, respectively\, she spent a semester at Beijing University\, and in 2009\, she became a junior lecturer at the Department of East Asian Studies of Georg-August-University Göttingen\, where she is responsible for research and education in the field of Chinese Law. She is also currently working on her PhD thesis on property law in traditional China. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Language Diversity in the Sinophone World
DESCRIPTION:Language Diversity in the Sinophone World: Policies\, effects\, and tradition\nInternational Symposium\n Göttingen University\n 11 – 13 June 2015 \n\nDescription \nLanguage diversity is a ubiquitous feature in the sinophone world. In the past and present\, language planning agencies in the area commonly – if not uncontroversially – referred to as “Greater China” have responded differently to the challenges of multilingualism. After several decades of national language policy\, Mandarin is now widely used and broadly accepted in Mainland China\, Singapore\, and Taiwan. It is used to a much lesser degree in Hong Kong and Macao\, where Cantonese\, the major regional language\, arguably enjoys a higher prestige than other so‐called “dialects” elsewhere. At the same time\, there are notable differences with regard to international language planning – most important\, the incorporation of English into school curricula and/or the acceptance of English as an official language. \nOne purpose of the symposium is to bring together scholars who are working on language planning and official responses to language diversity. Another purpose is to compare the effects of language planning and the manifestations of language diversity in the daily lives of the speakers. Lastly\, we aim at situating the conference theme in a historical context. The reason behind this historical contextualization is to find out to what extent language-related phenomena are imbedded in Chinese traditions\, and to what extent they can be accounted for by analytical approaches that are not bound to Chinese culture and/or history. Topics include language contact phenomena (e.g.\, code mixing)\, multilingualism in classrooms\, language variation and language use in the media\, and nonofficial language ideologies and activities of language revivalist groups. \n  \nVenue\nGöttingen University\, Historical Observatory \nLocal organizers and contact persons\nHenning Klöter\nJulia Schulz \nIf you wish to attend the conference\, please contact us before 20 May 2015 at kloeter@uni-goettingen.de \nSpeakers and programm (pdf)\n \n  \nSponsors \nChiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange \n \nDeutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft / German Research Foundation (DFG) \n \nDepartment of International and Cross-strait Education of the Ministry of Education\, Republic of China (Taiwan) \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:7th East Asia Research Salon
DESCRIPTION:The 7th East Asia Research Salon\nDavid Reitemeier\n“Managing moral hazard and collective action problems in East Asian financial regionalism: End of the Road for the ASEAN-Way?”\nMarch 10\, 2015\, 5pm\nKWZ\, Heinrich- Düker- Weg 14\, CeMEAS Conference Room 0.701 \nAbstract:\nThe multilateralization of the Chiang Mai Initiative in 2009 in the wake of the global financial crisis marked an important step in the development of financial regionalism in East Asia.\nPotential spill over effects in other areas of East Asian regionalism or a development towards an East Asian Monetary Fund have been topics of academic debate ever since. I argue\, however\, that not enough attention has been paid to moral hazard and collective action problems in this debate. How China and other East Asian countries deal with these challenges can tell us a great deal about the chances for further progress in East Asian regionalism and about the nature of the regional institutions. Coming from a historical institutionalist perspective I plan to further elaborate on this notion\, focusing especially on regional surveillance and emergency lending mechanisms. Pending further research I argue that it is difficult for the East Asian region to manage moral hazard and collective action problems due to the nature of the ASEAN -Way and China’s role in the region. In the absence of successful management of these challenges\, the regional financial institutions are in danger of becoming mere talking shops. \nIn his research David focuses on regionalism and regional instiutions in East Asia as well as on Chinese foreign and econmic policy and political decision making processes.\nSince 2014: Research associate at the Department for East Asian Studies\, University of Göttingen and PhD student at the University of Bochum. Working title of the dissertation: “Chinas contributions to the institution building process in East Asian Financial Regionalism under the APT Framework: Managing moral hazards and collective action problems”\n2010 – 2013: MA in East Asian Politics\, University of Bochum. SUMMARY:German Japanese Colloquium 2015
DESCRIPTION:German- Japanese Colloqium 2015\nKnowledge Transfer across Borders: Integrative Approaches\nWednesday\, January 14\, 2015\n4pm – 6:30pm\nAssembly Hall\, Wilhelmsplatz 1\, 37073 Göttingen \nThe festive opening of the international conference on “Knowledge Transfer Across Borders” is open to all.\n \nIn today’s globalized\, knowledge-intensive world\, the accumulation and transfer of knowledge has become a key success factor for organizations. However\, knowledge transfer is complex due to the difficulties in defining\, storing and circulating knowledge. This challenge increases even more when knowledge is transferred across national\, cultural and linguistic borders. Despite the importance of the topic\, prior research has been fragmented and sometimes inconclusive\, partly due to disciplinary boundaries. The two keynote speakers address these challenges from their respective academic backgrounds\, neurobiology and international business. \nKeynotes by\nProf. Dr. Atsushi Iriki (RIKEN Brain Science Institute\, Wako City\, Japan)\nEvolutionary Biology of the Human Mind\nProf. Dr. Markus Pudelko (International Business\, University of Tübingen)\nKnowledge Transfer in Multinational Cooperations

SUMMARY:The 6th East Asia Research Salon
DESCRIPTION:The 6th Göttingen East Asia Research Salon\nJun Chu\n“Urban citizenship\, mobility and border regime. Contested social spaces of migrant workers in Shanghai.”\nDate: July 15\, 2014\, 6.15pm-7.30pm\nPlace: CeMEAS-Meeting Room\, KWZ-Building\, Heinrich-Düker-Weg 14\n \nAbstract:\nThe growing mass protests and movements of migrant workers in China have become a highly focused issue for years. They are described either as “contesting citizenship in urban china” (Solinger 1999) or as “the making of a new working class” (Chan and Pun 2009). In my dissertation\, these phenomena will be understood in connection with citizenship\, mobility regime and the production of social spaces from a critical perspective. In reference to the concepts of “act of citizenship/doing citizenship”\, “differential inclusion” and “ethnographical border regime analysis” from critical migration and citizenship studies\, this work will focus on the social processes\, how urban citizenship in Shanghai is emerging in contestation and conflicts. In what way do the local governments make policy and use strategies to include migrant workers with gradated status of “urban citizen”? How do the migrant workers in Shanghai practice urban citizenship and claim their rights in daily life and workplace? Furthermore\, how are urban spaces produced and negotiated through the assemblage of these multi-scale practices? The research is based on empirical fieldwork in Shanghai with mixed qualitative methods incl. narrative interviews\, participated observation and discourse analysis etc. The next fieldwork is planned for the upcoming autumn. \nJun Chu\nSince 10/2013 PhD candidate in Cultural Anthropology\, University of Göttingen\, Germany\nTitle of Dissertation: Urban citizenship\, mobility and border regime. Contested social spaces of migrant workers in Shanghai.\n10/2009 – 05/2013 University of Göttingen\, Germany\, Sociology and Cultural Anthropology(M.A.)\nTitle of Master Thesis: The constitution of relational social spaces in a new tenement district. SUMMARY:Lecture: Lord Yang - A God and His Special Role in Local Politics of Late Qing China (1840 - 1867)
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Lord Yang – A God and His Special Role in Local Politics of Late Qing China (1840 – 1867)\nMonday\, July 14\, 2014\n2.15pm\, KWZ Room 0.608\nProf. Dr. Lo Shih- chieh \nIn early February 1855\, a group of “local bandits” led by Qu Zhenhan occupied Yueqing city of Wenzhou prefecture for a week. According to Qing officials’ report\, this incident was suppressed by the divine manifestation of Lord Yang\, a popular local deity in Wenzhou. Instead of focusing on how Qing authority regained control over local society\, this presentation takes advantage of the local materials available in Wenzhou to explore the following two questions: How does a local deity function politically in local society? What is the role of popular religion in local politics and even national politics in late Qing China? This local history study sheds light on the significance of popular religion in Chinese political culture. \nPicture: Ashley Wang\, Flames [hdr] *Explored*\, CC BY-ND 2.0\, https://www.flickr.com/photos/ashley-rly/3783945913/

SUMMARY:The 5th East Asia Research Salon
DESCRIPTION:The 5th Göttingen East Asia Research Salon\n Marina Schmitz\n“Preventing Labor Turnover of Blue Collar Workers in China – Tilting at Windmills?” \nDate: June 17\, 2014\, 6.15pm-7.30pm\nPlace: CeMEAS-Meeting Room\, KWZ-Building\, Heinrich-Düker-Weg 14\n \n \nMarina Schmitz\, University of Göttingen\nRetaining employees is the crucial issue of HR managers in China nowadays. Especially manufacturing companies in China report turnover rates of 70 percent and above. Thus\, it is further necessary to deepen academic understanding of the mindset of blue collar workers\, specifically\, psychological and sociological aspects of voluntary turnover behavior among this cohort\, being the driving force of the Chinese economy. To get further insights into the topic\, I conducted interviews with blue collar workers and HR managers in China regarding work related issues\, especially asking them about influence factors of labor turnover decisions. Drawing on the knowledge I acquired in the interviews\, I am currently developing a survey which should enable me to answer the following research questions: What kind of incentives should the companies offer to make the blue collar workers stay? Which job characteristics are important for the blue collar workers regarding long-term retention? Is there a difference between the blue collar workers working in different regions or differing in demographic aspects? \nMarina Schmitz is research associate and doctoral student at the Chair for HRM and Asian Business at the University of Göttingen. She obtained her master in Sinology (Classical Sinology\, Economic Studies) at the University of Trier in 2012. In her research she focusses on retention of factory workers and the influence factors of labour turnover in China. \n  \nCeMEAS will provide coffee and light refreshments\, however feel free to bring along additional food and drinks.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Chinese Multinationals going Global: Strategies and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Chinese Multinationals going Global: Strategies and Challenges\nThursday\, June 12\, 2014\n4pm\, Theologicum Hörsaal T01\nProf. Dr. Klaus Meyer \nOver the past decade many Chinese enterprises have expanded their operations overseas and became substantive players in several industries and host countries.\nThis talk will explore the strategies that these Chinese companies pursue to catch up withglobal industry leaders\, focusing in particular on processes of learning about international\nbusiness operations\, and the acquisition of strategic assets overseas. It will also explore differences in these strategies between the first wave of overseas investments by state enterprises that still dominate many sectors in China\, and the second wave led by private companies in a wide range of manufacturing sectors. Despite the impressive acceleration of outward investments\, Chinese multinationals face considerable challenges managing\ntheir overseas operations\, especially acquired business units. The talk will thus conclude by outlining these operational and cross-cultural challenges\, and discuss approaches to managing them.\n \nPhoto: Mike Behnken\, I ♥ Shanghai\, CC BY-ND 2.0\, https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikebehnken/5118469004/
