From the introduction of Christianity and new technologies to the rise of modern science and so-called “Western” intellectual trends\, China’s religious and intellectual history has been shaped through continuous interactions across regional and national boundaries. Within these processes\, Buddhism played a significant yet often underappreciated role as a medium of conceptual innovation\, cultural exchange\, and political engagement. \nRather than treating concepts and discourses as fixed categories\, this workshop approaches them as entry points for examining how Buddhist thinkers\, institutions\, and communities rearticulated ideas\, reshaped language\, and responded strategically and creatively to changing political\, social\, and intellectual conditions. Participants are invited to engage with these issues from diverse methodological and disciplinary perspectives. \nThe workshop understands “modern transformation” not as a singular rupture\, but as a complex and ongoing process involving continuities as well as changes across different temporal and spatial dimensions. DESCRIPTION:Prof. Rana Mitter (Harvard University)\nChina and the US in a Changing Global Order: How Can History Help Us Read the Future?\nRoom: KWZ 0.603\n19. June (Friday)\, 12:15–13:45\n \nAbstract:\nThe world of the past 80 years is rapidly coming to a close\, and a new order is emerging.  On every major issue\, we need new thinking.  What does the new tension between the US and China mean for Asian regional security\, and how will it affect Europe?  What will AI and technological change affect global politics?  What will be the role of the Middle Powers navigating between the US\, China and Russia?  And can history teach us how to understand the present and future?\n \nSpeaker:\nRana Mitter is ST Lee Chair in US-Asia Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School. He is the author of several books\, including Forgotten Ally: China’s World War II (2013) which won the 2014 RUSI/Duke of Westminster’s Medal for Military Literature\, and was named a Book of the Year in the Financial Times and Economist. His latest book is China’s Good War: How World War II is Shaping a New Nationalism (Harvard\, 2020).

Despite these clear patterns\, we lack a systematic\, empirically grounded interdisciplinary  understanding of new civilizationisms. What are the historical genealogies\, intellectual trajectories and academic matrices underlying the forms of new civilizational  thought across these regions and the globe at large? How do recent forms of civilizationism (both globally and in single societies) resemble earlier articulations of civilizational identities\, and in what regard do they differ from such antecedents? Its state-led economic model and the close alignment of economic and political objectives distinguish China from Western economies\, firmly positioning it at the centre of contemporary geoeconomic dynamics. Renewed geopolitical tensions\, shifting trade policies\, and heightened strategic rivalry—particularly following the return of the Trump administration in the United States in 2025—have added new volatility and uncertainty to international economic relations. Frictions over market access\, competition practices\, and strategic industries have intensified. As these dynamics evolve\, the need for rigorous\, policy-relevant academic research on China’s global economic role has become more pressing than ever. \nBuilding on the success of its previous editions\, the 3rd Kiel-Göttingen-CEPR China Conference will once again bring together leading international scholars to analyse China’s role in the global economy. Hosted in central Berlin\, the conference aims to deepen dialogue between cutting-edge academic research and policy practice. Chinese EV manufacturers are expanding their technological capabilities\, scaling production at remarkable speed\, and entering European markets with highly competitive prices and rapidly improving quality. At the same time\, German automakers remain deeply tied to China for sales\, production\, and innovation. As geopolitical tensions grow and industrial policies become more assertive\, German automakers face pressure to adapt their business operations and long-term strategies. How serious is the challenge posed by rising Chinese competition for German manufacturers and suppliers? Where do German automakers and suppliers continue to hold a competitive edge? Where can German and Chinese automakers and suppliers continue to cooperate? After completing his doctorate at the Chair of Financial Sciences at the University of Würzburg\, he worked for four years on the scientific staff of the German Council of Economic Experts. Since 2015\, he has headed the Economic Intelligence & Economics department at the VDA. Sander works on eurozone fiscal policy\, the institutional architecture of EMU and EU trade and industrial policy. Prior to joining the CER\, Sander worked as an advisor to the ECB Representative at the International Monetary Fund\, covering the IMF’s surveillance of eurozone policies and sovereign debt issues. Before his posting in Washington\, he was an economist in the ECB’s EU Institutions and Fora Division\, where he focused on the EU’s policy response to the Covid-19 pandemic\, economic and fiscal governance\, ESM reform and the ECB’s relations with other institutions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModeration\n\n\nJulia Fiedler\nJulia Fiedler is Senior China Editor at Table.Briefings.
