Meet Our Researchers: Dr. Cornelia Schindelin

Dr. Cornelia Schindelin joined the CeMEAS in May 2023. She has been filling the professorship “Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL)” since the summer term 2020. She previously worked as a permanent lecturer at the Department of Translation Studies, Linguistics and Cultural Studies (FTSK) of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in Germersheim and also for many years as lecturer for TCFL at the Department of Sinology of Eberhard Karls University Tübingen.

Both in her master’s thesis and her doctoral dissertation, she has worked on the Chinese character system from a grapholinguistic perspective. Her interest in the Chinese writing system is also reflected in her contributions to specialized journals, books, and conferences. Other publications deal with the modern Chinese language from a quantitative-linguistic perspective or with questions of language teaching. She was also involved several textbook projects for Chinese as a foreign language.

At the moment, research in the area of teaching Chinese as a foreign language is at the fore for her, but language acquisition of Chinese, problems of textbook design that need to be explored empirically, error analysis of Chinese texts written by German-speaking learners, issues in corpus linguistics and translation science also fall into the scope of her interests.
